William M. Reuss IV, D.D.S.
Dr. Reuss IV graduated from the University of California, San Francisco Dental School in 1999. He received his bachelor of science degree in physiology from the University of California at Davis in 1994. Following dental school he completed a one year residency in Advanced General Dentistry at the University of Florida in St. Petersburg. This training provided tremendous opportunity in the placement and restoration of dental implants, state-of-the-art techniques in cosmetic dentistry, and full mouth rehabilitation. The residency program also benefited from the association with Dr. Peter Dawson’s Advanced Dental Center. Here, Dr. Reuss attended a series of lectures and workshops covering occlusion, TMJ, and dental reconstruction.

Dr. Reuss also completed a 10-month implant training program (2000) at the University of Miami under the instruction of Dr. Arun Garg, a leading researcher and teacher in bone grafting. Focus was upon bone grafting, sinus augmentation, and surgical and prosthetic aspects of implant dentistry.

Dr. Reuss IV completed the fourth and highest level of the Orognathic Bioesthetics International in 2006 after a three year program in full mouth rejuvenation. Bioesthetic dentistry focuses on a health based way of evaluating the chewing system and relating it to the entire body.

Doctor is a member and currently serves on the board for the Northern California Dental Society. He was their President in 2008 and currently serves as their editor for their society’s newsletter. He is also a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, the American Association of Implant Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Dr. Reuss IV, Marie (his wife), and their three daughters keep a full schedule. Their daughters ages are 9, 7 and 5, who are very active in school and gymnastics. Audrie, their oldest daughter, has been the California State Champion for her age group for 2008 and 2009. Xanthea, their middle daughter will be starting her first gymnastic season in 2010, while Daphne will be cheering for her older sisters.

In cases where there is a lot of decay or other problems our first priority is to make our patient comfortable. After being comfortable in the dental chair, it gives us the freedom to provide beautiful smiles.

This patient was seen on an emergency visit because of a fall and fracturing of the front two teeth. This can be a difficult scenario because not only is there trauma to the teeth but also to other parts of the face. Our first objective is to get the patient comfortable as quickly as possible. When teeth break in this way, the nerve can be very sensitive and even breathing in air through the mouth can be painful. With this patient we were able to relieve the sensitivity and repair the fracture in a timely fashion. The patient and parents left happy!

Fluoride Varnish contains a high concentration of fluoride that is in gel-like form that is painted onto the teeth after your perio therapy appointment. This is a preventative tool that we use to help keep your teeth strong and decay free. A recent study by University of California San Francisco (UCSF) shows the benefit of frequent Fluoride Varnish applications.

Most everyone has seen the movie Star Wars and have been dazzled by the duels with the “light saber”. Well, dentistry has come up with its own and uses the latest technology to develop a laser that can cut through both hard and soft tissue. The Biolase MD is the laser we use to enhance our patient’s dental experience.

Some of the benefits of the Laser are:

1. Minimally invasive and conservative preparations of the tooth structure.

2. Smaller dose of anesthetic needed. Some cases, No shot!

3. Excellent and faster soft tissue healing.

4. No drill- In some cases we don’t need to use the dreaded drill.

5. Works great for soft tissue surgery- no scalpel is needed.

This patient had a significant amount of recession on her lower left bicuspids and molar. We decided that the three teeth with the gold needed to be protected and enhanced around the roots. In the before photo there are tooth colored fillings that had been previously placed at the neck of the root because of decay and wear. This is a common problem in areas where there is gum recession. The cervical portion (neck) of the root is more susceptible to decay and breakdown. Another problem that the patient was having was that the tissue was very fragile and tender around the roots. The patient elected to have an Alloderm graft which would allow us to add tissue with only one surgery site. We used the patient’s own blood to gain a platelet rich mixture that also contained growth factors that help supercharge the healing around the new graft. The before and after photos are 3 years apart and show how the tissue matures over time. This procedure I have been using over the last several years is minimally invasive and provides a great result in areas where the tissue is missing.

When teeth are lost in the chewing system, bad things happen. The most obvious problems with missing teeth are lack of chewing forces and loss of esthetics. Other problems that arise but are often overlooked until its too late are; drifting of adjacent teeth into the missing space, loss of bone in a horizontal and vertical dimension, and a change in bite patterns- to just name a few.

The dental implant is a great way to replace these missing teeth. There are many types of dental implants; blades, root form, subperiosteal, mini’s,etc. The most common are root form implants that mimic the roots of teeth. The dental implant is made up of two parts; 1. the titanium screw that goes into the bone for support and 2. the abutment which is top part that supports the Crown. In our office we do both of these steps making the process easy for you.

This patient had two teeth that were missing and wanted to restore her smile. After studying her New Tom Scan(3d image) we found that she had lost a significant amount of bone over the years due to her missing teeth. We elevated the sinus to provide enough bone to place two implants. All this was done with local anesthesia and minimal discomfort. The digital x-ray shows how the sinus was elevated with the abutments in place (no crowns). The final picture shows the finished crowns and the nice tissue surrounding the implants.

It is often said that, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. But there are certain characteristics and qualities that hold true to make something beautiful. When we look at the smile there are things that need to happen in order to appear beautiful. One of these God given principles is based on biology and is not man made. We have to look at what nature provides to capture this beauty. Bioesthetic is a term that tries to capture this process. Health, stability, and form are some of the words that describe how we can have this beautiful harmony in the chewing system. Since we work with a dynamic system, we must look at the whole before consuming ourselves with the details, of which there are many. What we find most rewarding about this Bioesthetic process is seeing the holistic changes of patients going from disease to optimum health.

This patient underwent the Bioesthetic process to address her concerns of a tired, worn chewing system. One of her chief complaints prior to treatment was that the muscles in her face were always tired and never seemed to be comfortable. After treatment she experienced a much more comfortable smile that was beautiful.
